I watch the Oscars with two men so don't be that surprised that I went over to a Twitter Oscar party where we dished on all things sparkly and bright. It is simply not a party if you can't go on and on about the fashion as it walks through the door. One of my favorite things to do the next morning is to view all the photos from the Vanity Fair party, they just seem to capture the glamour and excitement that Hollywood celebrates on that one big night. Now, back to my favorite part of last night's Oscar fashion........
........and the pixie hairdo that everyone is talking about. Charlize Theron got my early vote last night for the best overall style award, a regal Dior silhouette that came forward in a sea of busy sparkles (though I love some sparkle). And that hair! The post-party chatter is all about this pixie haircut and even Charlize herself had this to say about the brave act of going short, short 'It's the most freeing thing, I highly recommend it. I think every woman should do it.' What do you think? Could you see going short, short? And if you can't, do you wish you could?

ReplyDeleteI did go very short in my 40's and it was wonderful fun. Now, mid 50's its too harsh on my bone structure. The ease was fabulous but then everything seemed to take less time then.
ReplyDeleteCharlize Theron would look stunning wearing a bin-bag! Of course she looked absolutely gorgeous and I did like her dress a lot - the simplicity of it just highlighted her beauty.
ReplyDeleteI've had my hair exactly like hers (but brunette) in my mid 20s and loved it. Since then I've let it grow long again and I'm not ready just yet to go back to short just yet..

I love it on her! Not everyone can carry it, but I often think it has more to do with confidence and how a woman feels in the cut than anything. I had a pixie cut for many years when I was in my twenties, and I LOVED it. In my forties, I don't think it would look as good or as feminine on me. That's not to say it wouldn't look fabulous on lots of women in the forties, fifties, and beyond (as in the beautiful Judi Dench), it just doesn't suit me now. Regardless, it is one of my all-time favorite cuts--a timeless classic.
ReplyDeleteCharlize Theron was my overall favorite I think, because she is the complete package. I love the pixie cut on her and her make-up was perfection. I am 68 and will keep my hair very short because of its ease, but because it is ME! This is not to say I don't love and admire those long tresses on younger women.
ReplyDeleteCharlize is like Hailey - stunning, strong and soft all rolled into one package. Their understated look is what makes them so attractive {ok - they have good genes as well}. I agree with Gigi - Judi Dench is a more mature actress who wears her hair strikingly as well.
ReplyDeleteHello Sande - I've been trying not to peek at all the excitement before it airs late tonight but I'm like a moth to a flame!! Naomi's dress & hair has to be my favourite I've seen thus far, absolutely stunning. Charlize would look good bald wouldn't she? How I love her fearlessness to cut her hair off. So many women cling onto their hair as if it's got a life of it's own. I never use to be like that, but sadly I am now. I am way too chicken as I get older. It's as if my hair is my last gasp to feeling younger. If my bum was skinnier and I wouldn't look like a bowling pin..I may just think twice!! How about you, would you pixie? xx
ReplyDeleteShe was truly picture perfect ... and that pixie cut was adorable and elegant all at the same time! I had a pixie cut in kindergarten and didn't like it, but since college I have wanted to cut my hair short short! If I had Charlize's face/complexion, I'd do it in a heartbeat.
ReplyDeleteI am always wanting to "pixie" Deborah (Dumbwit), would do it in a minute if I thought it was thick enough. I adore that haircut! I have my hair the shortest ever (not counting the pixie at 10) right now and I do love the ease of shorter hair. If it suits your face, I think it is a chic way to age as well. Mind you, I have friends with long thick hair and they would be crazy to cut it. So much of our hair issues after 50 are tied into our skin, our weight, going gray, so not so easy a decision in any direction. I try to adjust as it goes along. xx

ReplyDeleteI have my hair cut short every few years. I let it grow to shoulder lenght sometimes extending all the way to my shoulder blades and then I just get the need to let it all go. And yes, 'it's the most freeing rejuvenating thing a woman can ever do.

ReplyDeleteI loved so many of the gowns and dos last night, but the short one didn't win my vote. It could have been a little longer and been fine. I tried this a couple of years ago, and it was just too boyish for me.
I thought so many of the women and men looked amazing, and was happy with most of the awards.

When I was in my thirties, and had the face to get away with it, I went very short like this and it was very liberating, and pretty too, if I do say so myself, and yes, if I could, I would do it again. But haven't you noticed that beautiful longer hairstyles are coming back again?

Went at least that short a month ago and have loved it. Got too old for longer hair and was feeling that it was pulling my face down, down, down. I think short short is great for young women and again for us women of a certain age. It is freeing and youth-afying!

I wish I could wear my hair short like Carlize - she is so beautiful. I love watching the fashion at the Oscars but since everyone is using a stylist nowadays there aren't many "worst dressed" to even discuss. Everyone looks totally put together - except Helen Bonham Carter, she is always interesting!
ReplyDeleteIn my 60s and decided to go natural. For years I wore my hair long, but decided to go pixie. In my youth I'd get Audrey Hepburn comments now older and packing more "wisdom", I get the Judy Dench...that's Dame Dench, fine by me. I think Charlize exudes confidence and that is always sexy.
ReplyDeleteI love award shows but here in London we got an hour and a half on the Monday night on some random sky channel which I did watch but it was so edited it was hardly worth the effort.......made me actually miss living in LA where the whole place kicks off!!

That's allll I could think about the rest of the show... that is until Barbra sang...then I disolved into tears. Oh my goodness! What a Hollywood star she is. If and when I go that short I'll also toss out the color! Oh to be so carefree.

A decade ago, I had the same cut. It was fun. I would do it again but I realize it takes more work (more frequent trims, more focus on carefully applied make up as the face takes center stage, and well placed highlights to keep it looking soft and piecey). Seeing Charlize is almost inspiration enough to do it all over again but I am, right now, enjoying the diversity that shoulder length hair affords.
