Grocery Store Couture..............beside the lettuce and yogurt

By all accounts, Joe Fresh appeared to be an odd concept when it opened across Canada in 2006. Maybe clever, maybe not. A clothing store right beside the yogurt section in our grocery store? First I noticed the adorable kids clothing, then I started buying the sweetest ensembles for my little great-nieces, then I started noticing some seriously chic style...........for me. Now I am off and running with this Canadian concept of "grocery store couture", conveniently adding very affordable and stylish summer shifts (16.00-29.00) to our grocery bill and stalking the new inventory on a bi-weekly basis. Apparently I am not alone in stalking new finds at Joe Fresh, when the Canadian import opened their first US stores a few months back, 100's camped out for the New York flagship store opening (there are now 6 Joe Fresh stores in New York, New Jersey, and Long Island locations here). Heads up, Joe Fresh will be coming your way. It helped that Canadian mega-grocery retailer Loblaws hired the Canadian fashion whiz Joe Mimran, the original founder of Club Monaco to stylishly maneuver Joe Fresh to global noticeSo much for keeping my chic little buying secret all to myself...............I was really hoping they weren't going to be so darn clever. I could have scooped that yellow maxi skirt for sure.

  1. I've had the opportunity via my past event work to meet Joe on many occasions; he is the nicest man, so warm and welcoming. His pretty and oh so sweet wife Kim Newport-Mimran is the creative design and owner of Pink Tartan {love it!}. Together they have injected wonderful clean style to the Canadian design front.
I agree Sande - Joe Fresh has been our chic little buying secret in Canada. I have to admit that my Granddaughter is the recipient of LOTS of Joe kids collection, which is so darn cute.

  2. Well, Sande, you must have the equivalent of a Whole Foods or Rice Epicurean to find these lovelies. Who knew? But, thanks, looks really good. xx's

  3. I so hope these cute clothes make their way to Maine grocery stores, too! How fun! You know, when I was a kid, my dad managed a grocery store, and back in those days, it was common to find clothing at small-town grocery stores, but none of it was chic. For years, all of my sneakers came from my dad's store!

    I love that maxi!!! xoGigi

  4. We have a local boutique supermarket in our area that in addition to its high prices has the best assortment of giftware, accessories, bath and beauty products and some clothing. Besides the high prices making it dangerous to shop there, it takes twice as long "to do" the store because the stuff is everywhere! Very clever marketing, and VERY FUN to shop there occasionally. I buy my "designer" dish soap there which is made also by a local company. The brand name is Caldrea, and if you google the name you can see the products. My favorite fragrance they have is Basil Blue Sage. Smells like a spa, and the candle is fabulous!

  8. Well Sande, you are not alone here in Canada! Joe Fresh is a well kept secret among many, I think ! I've seen many of the ladies hiding behind their designer shades trying to shop incognito while navigating the aisles with their carts, very humorous ! I just recently found some great maxi dresses for the summer, they are super for shopping or a quick trip to, where else....the grocery store! N.xo

  13. Sande,

I have honestly never heard of this, but I am by no means surprised that you, the lover of color, are the one to fill me in on this new colorful shopping trend. My mind is whirring with images of little girls clothing hanging on racks not too far from the rasberries and nectarines! What a cute concept!

I hope you are enjoying your week!

  18. Lately it seems the only place I buy clothes for me or my grandkids is @ superstore (loblaws) here in Alberta. The stock changes so fast that if one doesn't go twice a week your screwed. Its not unusual to spot something at my local outlet that is out of my size....I have been known to drive to other locations to get my fix. Like today....there I was checking out the clearance section when I spotted my size in something - I go often (it's in my neighborhood) and there it was in clearance...don't get me wrong, there's nothing better than the clearance wrack...but how come I didn't notice this when it was regular price - with all those colors choices grrr. Then I spotted another wrack different top, regular price---multiple colors, great style ....only S and XS available. And yet I was in this stores yesterday and these tops where not displayed. When I asked the clerk about this she maintained that she just put them out this morning and by 2pm all the L and M in 6 different colors no less-----were all gone. So here I sit debating if I want to drive to another locations---bugger!!!!
